A Couple Hikes

I took a couple hikes while up at the cabin last week.  Here are some of thee photos. First up, the South Long Lake Forest Trail near the south end of Long Lake.  This is about 1.6 miles in length and mostly wooded.   It is an easy hike with well marked trails. The color was a bit hit or miss, but it was a great […]

Churches of Rome Website

I received a message a while back from Ralph Conde who is working on a website http://www.churches-of-rome.info.  He has visited about 80 of the churches in Rome over the last 10 years and has posted descriptions and photos of each.  He had seen my blog post from Santa Maria in Transpontina and wanted to use some of my photos.  After looking at his site, I was […]

Rome – Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica of Saint Mary Major) is the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome and it is because of its size that it receives the title “major”.  The earliest building on the site was the Liberian Basilica or Santa Maria Liberiana, after Pope Liberius (352–366). Rome – Santa Maria in Traspontina

We were able to celebrate mass at Santa Maria in Traspontina, just a block away from our hotel, and only about 4 blocks from Vatican City.  I was certainly not expecting a local parish church to be as beautiful at this. There is an interesting history of this site.  Pope Alexander VI (1492-1503) demolished an ancient Roman pyramid on this same site (the Meta Romuli, […]

Florence – Santa Maria del Fiore – Interior

Let’s go ahead and wrap up the Duomo of Florence.  This cathedral is know for its exterior, not its interior.  However, the inside, although somewhat plain, is still very nice. However, it is known for its stained glass windows, three of which are shown below. However, I thought the dome was most beautiful. Other views of the interior. OK, so the using the word “plain” […]

Florence – Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore – Exterior

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (St. Mary of the Flower) is one of Florence’s most dominant attractions.   The cathedral was begun at the end of the 13th century by Arnolfo di Cambio, and the dome, which dominates the exterior, was added in the 15th century on a design of Filippo Brunelleschi. A statue to each of these important architects can be found outside to the […]
