Another Layer of Fresh Snow

We got another inch or so of fresh snow last night. The ice from yesterday starting to fall from the trees, replaced by the snow sticking to all the branches of the trees. Here are a few images from this morning. Every bush, every tree branch, every weed is covered with a layer of snow. The bird here doesn’t seem to be bothered by the […]

New Year Day Ice

Welcome to 2021! In spite of many things we will be glad to put behind us, 2020 had some really good things I am thankful for. I hope each of you can reflect on some of the good from the previous year. Here in southwest Michigan, the new year brought with it freezing rain followed by snow.  Although that made travel difficult, it left behind […]

Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn – Well not Quite

We headed out to the local park last week in hopes of seeing the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn.  Unfortunately, we live in southwest Michigan where the clouds build in the evening from being near the lakes.  So, just as the sky was getting dark, the clouds moved in. But, so as to not waste the trip, I got a couple other photos I will […]

More Fall Color

The fall color in northern Michigan has been spectacular this year.  I took these photos a few weeks ago, and am finally getting them posted.   This first group of photos is at the Grass Lake State Forest Campground located west of Interlochen about 3 miles off the paved road, just off Reynolds Rd.  There were no campers on this cloudy day.  The campground is along […]

Color Tour

The color in northern Michigan is near or at the peak, depending on where you are looking.  We have taken a couple drives the last couple days to see the color and were not disappointed.  Along the way we stopped at a scenic spot in the Florey’s Ranch Estates, the Mayfield Pond Park in Mayfield, Brown Bridge Pond, now simply the Boardman River, and the […]

Dahlia Hill Society of Midland

A couple weeks ago, we visited Midland and the Dahlia Hill Society.  WOW! What a display of dahlias.  All kinds of dahlias.  Amazing colors and textures.  I didn’t realize that dahlias came in so many forms.  I took LOTS of pictures and am just going to present them here in no particular order so you can get a sense of the variety we saw. Click […]

Color, Reflections, and Things that Fly

Finally got back on the lake this morning after a long absence.  The lake was very flat making for some interesting reflections and easy kayaking. I’ll start with color.  Yes, the color is starting to change up here.  Not very widespread, yet, but you can see it coming. Although the sky was quite overcast when we started, the sun did finally come out, leaving some […]

Calm Waters

We went for an evening paddle yesterday with a good friend.  She hadn’t been out in a couple weeks and, actually, neither had we.  The breeze was dying down and the water was getting calmer.  A great evening for a paddle. We were pleased to see the pair of loons out.     We chased this kingfisher down the shoreline until it decided to fly back […]

TART Trail to Suttons Bay

What a beautiful morning for a bike ride along the TART trail to Suttons Bay!  The TART trail starts in Traverse City, but we chose a trail head closer to Suttons Bay, at Fouch Rd, only 11 miles each way.  The trail winds through farm land, hay fields, and orchards.  It is paved smooth and is off the busy roads, ideal for families and all […]

Perseids Meteor Shower

Rose and I went in search of the meteor shower last night.  We went to the Interlochen State Park boat launch on Green Lake and sat on the dock.  We had moderate success.  We saw about 5 in an hour.  We were looking southwest, perhaps not the best direction, but that was where the sky was the darkest.  Northeast points us directly at Traverse City […]
