More Eagles and a Heron

We were at the lake for the holiday weekend, but didn’t get out onto the lake until Tuesday morning.  I’m really glad we got out.  We were rewarded with not one bald eagle, but two.  And, we got very close to a great blue heron.  Here are the pics. Just as we headed south from the OCC shore, just past the reeds, we found a […]

Bald Eagle and Red Headed Woodpeckers

It was a bright, sunny morning on the lake.  We had no more than started heading toward the south end of the lake when we spotted the bald eagle in a tall pine tree along the shore.  Unfortunately, it didn’t stay put very long, and I was a ways off when it flew.  I did manage to get a couple photos.   A bit further […]

More Birds on Duck Lake

The lake was as smooth as glass Sunday morning.  The kayaking was easy.  Other than a couple water skiers and a slow pontoon boat, I had the lake to myself.  And, as usual, there were several treats waiting for me. I was just getting started and not expecting to see anything so quickly.  However, this heron was sitting on a branch and posed long enough […]

Birds of Duck Lake

It was a perfectly calm morning on the lake.  The surface was like glass.  In our kayaks we headed over to the point with all the logs in the water to see the turtles sunning themselves.  However, there were no turtles.  In fact, as we paddled toward the south end of the lake, there were no turtles, no birds, no wildlife at all.  Continuing along […]

Beautifiul Morning on the Lake

Another great morning on the lake.  It wasn’t too choppy and the sun was shining. There were lots of birds around the water this morning.  The kingfishers were noisy and in constant motion, so no photos of them.  Here are a few of the others.       The water lilies were in full bloom, bright in the sunlight.           However, […]

An Evening and Morning Paddle

I was out on the lake Sunday evening and again Monday morning.  Both times of day are wonderful and have their own attraction.  Unfortunately, the water was a bit choppy both times.  However, there was plenty to see on the lake. We did catch another look at the loon family.  It seems that they are all doing well.  I couldn’t get any decent pictures due […]

Water Lilies and Kingfisher

Another quiet morning on the lake.  We heard the loons this morning and caught a glimpse of them at some distance, but not close enough to a photo.   It is amazing how the lake changes from day to day.  Yesterday morning there were none of the white water lilies that I like so much.  This morning, there were dozens in various places.  Here are […]

The Baby Loon and More

Finally got back up to the lake and in the kayak.  It was a pleasure to see the baby loon with Mom and Dad.  It seems to be doing just fine.  Click on each image for a larger view.   Here are a couple more of Mom and Baby.   I also saw three young bucks at the water’s edge.  Their antlers are just filling […]

Scenes from the Kayak

I’ve been out a few times in the kayak in Duck Lake.  Every year brings things that are familiar and things that are different.  This looks like a year with a bumper crop of turtles.  I’ve seen many more this year than last year.  Here are a few. This poor guy looks like his shell is peeling and the flies won’t leave him alone. I […]

Spring on the Lake

Yesterday afternoon was beautiful up here.  Down state it was raining and 45 degrees.  Up here the sun was shining, the winds were calm, and the temperature was in the low to mid 60s.  What a difference!  What an afternoon to be on the lake! There wasn’t much activity on the lake.  I did see a couple pairs of mallard ducks, one male hooded merganser, […]
