Streets of Assisi – Part 2

Today we have one last look at Assisi.  These are just some scenes from the street.  I don’t have any real commentary on these other than the captions on each photo and to say that you can see so many wonderful things if you are looking for them.                                   […]

Basilica di San Francesco d’Assisi

The most prominent church in Assisi is the Basilica di San Francesco d’Assisi (Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi).  Located on a high hill, it is easily seen from the valley below.  The view from the basilica to the valley is also stunning. However, as you approach the basilica through town, this is the facade you first see. Construction of the basilica began immediately after Francis’ […]

Art in the Streets of Assisi

There are many interesting pieces of art along the streets of Assisi.  Here are some of pieces I saw along the way. This light fixture was quite unique. One common theme is the Madonna with Child.  All different and all beautiful. Of course, St. Francis is also present. Art is also in the form of fountains. Santa Maria degli Angeli

Our tour this morning started in the valley below Assisi.   Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli (Saint Mary of the Angels) was constructed between 1569 and 1679 and encloses the small wayside chapel known as Our Lady of the Valley of Josaphat or of the Angels.  Legend tells us that this chapel was constructed under Pope Liberius (352-366).  Although abandoned and in poor condition at […]

Italy – View from the Hotel

Our hotel wasn’t in the heart of old Assisi, but had a lot of Italian charm.  The views were wonderful and teased us about the days to come.   There was a small garden out back with statues and some great views of the hillside and valley below.  This statue seems to have seen better days.  I wonder what happened to her head. We found […]

Pilgrimage to Italy – Day 1

We are just back from a wonderful trip to Italy.  We were gone 11 days and visited the cities of Assisi, Florence, Siena, and Rome, and saw many beautiful churches, cathedrals, and basilicas.  I will share some of the photos I took while in Italy and, hopefully, a bit about the sites we saw. I’ll break the trip down into small segments rather than blast […]
