So Many Stars

Last Friday night up at Duck Lake, the sky was very clear and there more stars than I’ve seen in a long time.  I had to get some photographs of them.  Here I present them in three formats.

The first is a simple photo of the stars.  Click on the image to see larger.

The second way is as a time-lapse of the stars moving through the sky.  There are about 120 photos taken over an hour (one every 30 seconds) resulting in a 4 second video.

And, the third is an image of the start tracks.  This can be done in PhotoShop, or, as I did here, using the free software, StarStaX.

Please comment below and let me know what you like and don’t like about these.  I have my own ideas, but would like to hear from you on your preferences.

Thanks

Mark

  1. Very nice, Mark. I really like the first simple photo. Is that a shooting star, just left of the middle, behind the trees?

    1. Thanks, Mara. Yes, I think it is a shooting star. I captured a couple other streaks in the sky, but they were airplanes (blinking lights as they moved).

  2. I think your star trails are wonderful. I hope to do some more of this type of shooting when I get up to a higher elevation and have some clear skies. The few times I tried, I never got anything as wonderful as yours. Wonderful images and video.

    1. Thanks, Karen. I’ll bet that you have some really dark skies up at the cabin. Should get some great shots of the milky way which I have trouble with here.
