Although the ferry ride to the island was quite chilly (we rode on top so we could get the best views), the day was sunny and beautiful on the island. We got off the ferry and walked up Main St. No cars, so transportation is by bicycle or horses. There are some commercial ferries loaded with semi trailers full of products for the island, but the products are off-loaded onto horse-drawn wagons and delivered to hotels, restaurants, and stores.
There are many lovely old homes, both along Main St. along Highway M-186. M-186 is 8 miles long and goes around the island. It is also the only state highway in Michigan that bans cars.
We picked up rental bikes and started around the island. We had great view of the water on our left all the way.
You can just make out the Mackinac Bridge at the horizon.
Almost back to town we saw Arch Rock. A bit further on, there were steps (207 of them) going up to the arch.
We returned the bikes and took a tour of the fort.
The view from the fort is impressive.
The next posts will include the churches on the island and the Grand Hotel.
