Rose and I drove to Northport Saturday specifically to find the Christmas Cove Farms. They specialized in heirloom apples, all those apples that aren’t grown commercially any more, if they ever were. In addition to the apples, they have a collection of over 10,000 pop bottles that line the walls and lots of metal signs hanging from the rafters.
The woman working there knew about all the apples and could make recommendations based on your tastes.
They have baskets of each type, and some baskets of a variety. Here are the 4 varieties we bought that the woman who worked there put together special for Rose. These are apples that Rose’s dad talks about that he remembers as a kid. They are 20 ounce, Green Pippen, Sheep Nose, and Grime’s Golden. I’ve never heard of any of these.
So, next time you are in the Northport area during apple season, do stop in.

Wow. I’d love to go there. I remember hearing about Weinsap (Winesap?)apples for good pie making. I never see those for sale. You guys find the most interesting places.
The winesap is an older variety of apple, but still available in some places.
