Located just north of Arcadia, Michigan, Inspiration Point Scenic Overlook offers spectacular views of Lake Michigan.
The view is nothing short of spectacular. The expansive blue waters of Lake Michigan meet the horizon in a seamless blend of sky and water.
At the upper observation deck we met a man retired from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). He was in part responsible for building of the decks. He shared an interesting story of its history.
The project started just over 30 years ago with only the lower platform. He was anxious to get this project completed because he wanted to marry his bride on the lower deck. The project was completed on time and they got married the day after the last board was nailed in place.
Soon after, he went back to MDOT and requested additional funding to purchase the adjoining hill and to build stairs to the top for a platform (210 stairs climbing 80 feet above the lower platform) that would be 300 feet above the water’s surface. At a cost of $100,000 and only 6 months later, the project was completed.
Standing at the top with his hand on the rail, he said, “I think its holding up pretty well.” I have to agree.
