When we finished at St. Nicolas Church, we went to the Alaska State Fair to meet with Rose’s cousin. In some ways the fair is much like a midwestern state fair, but in other way quite unique.
Much of the fair looks like any other fair.
OK, so most state fairs don’t have totem poles.
But what caught my eye was the view just outside the fairgrounds. They had fresh snow on the mountain tops the night before.
I went all the way to Alaska to find Pure Michigan Maple Syrup. They can’t produce maple syrup in Alaska because there are no maple trees. This is another example of the limited biodiversity in Alaska.
You can buy special insurance to get your off-the-road toys unstuck.
We finally made it to the produce building. I had read that due to the long hours of daylight, the produce can be huge. I was not disappointed.
But the prize goes to the largest pumpkin at 2147 pounds!
Here’s Rose to show the scale of this thing.
I went to the fair having no idea what I’d see but I wasn’t disappointed.
